There is a lot written about how to start an exercise plan. Most suggest you are a “one size fits all” kind of person and you should just go and do it. I suggest that we are not a “one size fits all” and actually, we have to think about our life style, eating habits, how foods effect our bodies, family commitments, work commitments, time and frame of mind.I prefer to label it a healthy life-style plan because it encompasses all aspects of health, not just fitness. An important factor is what we tell ourselves before we start. For example, telling ourselves, “I am so busy right now, I don’t have time to think about all of that healthy living stuff. When will I find the time? I have to take care of the kids first.” In the midst of our busy lives, thinking about adding just one more thing can seem overwhelming. It starts with a frame of mind. The old saying, you can only eat an elephant one bite at a time, fits here.
Think about what you tell yourself that stops you from starting. Some of these ideas might ring true for you, they did for me. “I’m too tired to take on another self-help idea. I want to feel better but how? I won’t fit in if I join a gym or start a yoga class.” You catch my drift. All those ideas are self-defeating. Start small. Make the choice to do it differently today.
Change one habit you might have. Instead of coming home from work and grabbing chips to eat, try an apple or an orange. Instead of heading to the computer to check email or Facebook, walk around the block. Start small. Make a choice to do it differently today.
Pay attention to how your body reacts to the foods you eat. Do you get bloated and gassy? Do you feel tired and want to take a nap an hour later? Start looking at food as medicine. Food can be good medicine or bad medicine. If you feel energized and good after eating something then most likely it’s good medicine. It’s the opposite for foods that deplete or drain you. Again start small. Make a choice to do it differently today.
No one says you have to completely overhaul your life-style but making small changes will start you in the right direction. Make a choice to do it differently today.
